MALE STERILISATION (VASECTOMY)

When a man is sterilized, he has a small operation to block off the tubes that carry sperm, and then he cannot make a woman pregnant any more. The tubes that are blocked are called the vas deferens, though we usually just call them the vas for short. The sterilization procedure for men is called vasectomy.

If you are married or in a long-term relationship you will probably be looking at vasectomy as a couple and the decision will affect you both, but ultimately it is your decision. You should think very carefully before choosing sterilization because it is a permanent method of contraception. If you already have children, you need to feel as sure as possible that no matter what happens in your life, you would not want to have another child. If you have never had children, then it may be an even more difficult decision for you to make and it should not be made in a hurry.

What is a vasectomy? When a man has a vasectomy, the tubes that carry sperm are cut and tied off or blocked off permanently.

Are there different types of vasectomy? There are not a lot of different ways of doing a vasectomy. It can be done under general anaesthetic or under local anaesthetic if the vas are easy to feel and the man has no medical problems that might make the surgery more difficult Some doctors make an incision on each side of the scrotum, one for each vas. Other doctors make only one incision at the midline of the scrotum and access each vas through that
